A term I use when defining the type of cardiovascular activity most of us think is the best for our fitness and health goals.

Think about it. We wake up, we want to get in some exercise, we think a cardio day is needed and immediately we are off to our familiar piece of equipment to do the same routine we always do. Or an outdoor jog in the same area of town, the same distance and amount of time, and the same speed. We as human beings like comfort. We have done this before, there are no surprises, we know we can complete it and feel good about doing it at the end. Unfortunately, our bodies adapt to these movements and effort levels and in the end, they burn less calories and show overall less progress.

But our health and fitness deserve more to make progress. To get your body, heart and muscular system to work differently, harder, and create growth, try some of these UST Personal Training: Cardio Tips!

-Change your type of cardio. Throw in some bike work. Go hit some stairs. Use the elliptical. Walk some hills. Swim or try some active fun sports.

-Try a day of interval training with your normal routine. Whatever type of cardio you most enjoy, stay with it, but try thirty seconds to a minute of intense output followed by a minute or two of slower pace. Keep this alternating back and forth.

-Change your overall speed, distance or goal. Stay with what you love but try something different with it. Go explore a new style or format. Who knows, you might love it!

-Lastly, throw in some agility or core drills at random segments in your standard routine. If you like the elliptical in the gym, maybe every two minutes you hop off and stay right beside the machine, throw in a quick 20 jumping jacks, 20 high knees and 20 situps. Then right back on the elliptical for another two minutes and repeat! You can also do this jogging outside by selecting random times to stop and hit these segments. And diversify! Throw in planks and leg raises for the core. Throw in burpees and mountain climbers for the agility.
